Politician and businessman Mike Mbuvi Sonko never fails to intrigue with his numerous antics on social media. Just days after calling out former members of his staff who ditched him after his political woes while gifting his loyal aides Christmas goodies, the former Nairobi Governor has now shared yet another video on his social media as he undergoes a fiery fire massage.

While interacting with his followers, Sonko claimed that the aim of the procedure was to reduce large amounts of cholesterol gained during the festivities.

"The festive season was filled with sherehe, lots of nyama choma and alcohol. We now embark on a journey towards a healthier and more balanced lifestyle. While the gym is a popular choice for fitness, it takes time to achieve your goal of losing weight, reducing cholesterol na kukata kitambi na mafuta."

He further added that he had settled for the procedure to drain toxins from his body.

“Kuna alternative za kusaidia kureduce macholestrol kutoka kwa mwili haraka kama hii nimeanza leo.” (There are various methods to detox like what I have started today).

According to Steve Mbugua, a professional massage therapist, this is an ancient technique that uses fire to relieve the muscle pain of his clients which involves placing several layers of towels and other isolating materials on the client's body. Then a towel soaked in alcohol is placed on top and set on fire. It burns for roughly a minute before the flames are put out with a wet towel. "The heat is meant to suck the moisture out of the body," said the pro therapist.

However, noting the sensitivity of the technique, Sonko urged those interested in undergoing a similar procedure to seek well-trained professionals to avoid accidentally burning vital organs, especially under the belly.

Asked if this was part of his New Year resolutions, Sonko said he strives to lead a healthier lifestyle and get down to work.
